School announces grants, awards, and sabbatical leaves

The following grants, awards, and sabbatical leaves were announced during the Sam Fox School's May 15 faculty and staff meeting.

Outstanding Staff Awards

The Outstanding Staff Awards recognize Sam Fox School staff members for their exceptional accomplishments, leadership, and service to the University. The recipients for 2011-12 are:

Jan Hessel, facilities manager and art preparator, Kemper Art Museum
Diane Mounts, executive assistant to the dean, Sam Fox School

Outstanding Teaching Awards

The Outstanding Teaching Awards are presented annually to two Sam Fox School faculty members in recognition of significant contributions to the School through exemplary teaching. The recipients for 2011-12 are:

Catalina Freixas, senior lecturer in architecture
Jennifer Ingram, W. H. Smith Visiting Assistant Professor of Fashion

2012 Faculty Creative Activity Research Grant Recipients

Ron Fondaw, professor of art, to travel to China to create a sculpture at the Fuping Pottery Art Village in Shaanxi.

Patty Heyda, Natalie Yates, and Christine Yogiaman, assistant professors, to pursue collaborative research drawing on their respective disciplines of urban design, landscape architecture, and architecture to map and re-envision the de-urbanizing landscape of North St. Louis.

Igor Marjanovic, associate professor of architecture, for the research and development of a detailed exhibition and publication plan investigating drawing as a generator of architectural discourse through the drawing collection of Alvin Boyarsky.

Eric Mumford, professor of architecture, to conduct research and begin development of a new textbook on the topic of Urbanism Since 1850.

Monika Weiss, assistant professor of art, to support the execution of her solo exhibition, Sustenazo-Lament II, at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago, Chile.

2012-13 Sabbatical Leaves

Jamie Adams, associate professor of art
Fall 2012 leave to pursue creative work culminating in a large solo exhibition at the David Klein Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan, and a European trip to investigate important painting collections and opportunities in European cities for Sam Fox School students.

Ken Botnick, professor of art, director of the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Studio for the Illustrated Book
Full-year leave to complete work on a book project, Vision and the Visual, and a limited-edition project in collaboration with the Dieu Donne Paper Mill on the subject of the Encyclopedie of Diderot and d'Alembert.

Sung Ho Kim and Heather Woofter, associate professors of architecture
Fall 2012 leave to pursue ongoing architectural projects with their firm, Axi:Ome (including a monograph on recent projects and an exhibition of works at the University of North Carolina), and further exploration of the relationship between practice and teaching, including work with Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea, on the development of its core architecture curriculum.

Zeuler Lima, associate professor of architecture
Fall 2012 leave to pursue a solo exhibition of drawings in the Museu da Casa Brasileira (state museum of architecture and design in São Paulo, Brazil) in conjunction with the 2012 International São Paulo Architecture Biennial, and work on two significant monographic publications on renowned Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi.
