February 1, 1965, letter from William N. Eisendrath Jr., then Curator of the Collections at the Washington University Gallery of Art, to Samuel Kootz Gallery and February 3, 1965, letter from Samuel Kootz Gallery to William N. Eisendrath Jr., WU 3942 object file, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Washington University in St. Louis (hereafter referred to as WU 3942 object file). In the February 3 letter, Kootz states that “the picture was exhibited in my gallery in 1948.” Research is ongoing to determine if Kootz acquired WU 3942 directly from the artist. It is likely that he did so, as Samuel Kootz was a prominent dealer for Picasso in the 1940s and hosted his first post-war retrospective in the United States in 1947.
